La Jolla Martin Johnson House wedding with Kristen & Nolan
Nolan and Kristen had an incredible Martin Johnson House wedding in La Jolla, and I was lucky to document it. It was a gorgeous day in one of my favorite San Diego wedding venues. I knew I was going to have a great time.
After a few getting-ready photos at Martin Johnson House, we were ready for the couple's first look. I like when couples decide on doing a first look at their wedding attire. It is not only a great moment that showcases raw emotion but also allows us to capture some family or bridal party photos before the wedding ceremony. That allows the couple to have less stress between the ceremony and reception and enjoy their party even more.
Nolan became very emotional when he saw his bride. Kristin had a contagious smile on her face. They stared at each other from a distance for a few seconds and then embraced each other with a beautiful hug and kiss. It was a memorable Martin Johnson House wedding first look. And the view of the Pacific Ocean in La Jolla always makes it more special.
Since we still had a few minutes before the guests started to arrive for the ceremony, we decided to do some bridal party photos. It was a fun group, and Nolan and Kristen's friends had a good time. After the group shots, the bride and groom went into hiding, and the guests started to arrive.
After everyone was seated, it was time for the Martin Johnson House wedding ceremony. The ocean in the background makes it for one of the best La Jolla wedding views. It was a small, intimate wedding where only the closest friends and family were present.
One of Kristen's best friends officiated the wedding and did a great job. She was very emotional, and we could tell she was really happy with the job they gave her. It was a short and sweet ceremony with a bubble exit. The couple stopped at the end of the aisle for a kiss creating the perfect opportunity for a great photo with the bubbles, the ocean, the guests cheering, and the beautiful La Jolla Ocean in the background.
As a San Diego wedding photographer, I'm used to photographing La Jolla weddings. It's always a great location and usually allows the option to go to the beach for some portraits. While Martin Johnson House weddings are close enough to the beach to go for some photos, Kristen and Nolan opted to stay around the venue instead. It's not a bad idea considering Martin Johnson House has many great locations for portraits.
We decided to walk up towards the edge of the cliff because the sun was lowering. I knew we were about to have an incredible sunset over the ocean and Scripps Pier.
I started with a few candid portraits of Nolan and Kristen walking to warm them up. I knew right away their connection would help me create some awesome La Jolla Martin Johnson House wedding photos. We watched the most beautiful sunset on a perfect day without any wind. We started to make our way back to the reception area once the sun set in the ocean. The couple was ready to party!
Before the grand entrance, Kristen and Nolan still had time to speak with their guests during cocktail hour. Everyone had the opportunity to congratulate the newlyweds, and the couple was happy to see all their loved ones gathered at their La Jolla wedding celebration.
Right after their grand entrance, Nolan and Kristen had the first dance at the Martin Johnson House deck. It was after sunset, so the sky had amazing shades of purple that gave the day a surrealistic feel. It made it even more unique. Sunsets are usually a big part of every La Jolla wedding, and I was happy we had a great one that day.
Dinner was served along with some awesome music. After that, the dancing started and never stopped. Kriste and Nolan, with their guests, danced for hours to great music.
It was a memorable Martin Johnson House wedding celebration, and I was very happy to be part of it. I wish the best to Nolan and Kristen, and I hope to return to the Martin Johnson House many times for more incredible oceanfront La Jolla weddings.

The Martin Johnson House is a very desired La Jolla wedding venue. So, if you're looking to book a date for your wedding, you need to act fast. Also, the Martin Johnson House has limited on-site parking because it's on the Scripps Institution of Oceanography campus. You might have to arrange transportation for your guests or ask them to Uber.
While the Martin Johnson House has an awesome outdoor setup but it's very exposed to the elements and does not have much room indoors. So, the weather could be a concern. Even though it rarely rains in San Diego, this could be an issue.
